Yankees-Twins trade idea brings $34M All-Star to New York
The New York Yankees have a need in the infield and could swing a trade for a switch-hitting All-Star on the Minnesota Twins. Willi Castro will be a free agent after the season and could be an asset for the Yankees.
Castro was an All-Star last season, carrying a .717 OPS. This season, he has an .818 OPS in 56 games. He is a versatile defender and could help the Yankees bring some stability to the infield, specifically at second base.
DJ LeMahieu has a .684 OPS in 32 games. He is not an elite defender at this point in his career, and his playing at second base places Jazz Chisholm Jr. at third base, where he is not the best defender. FanSided's Chris Landers suggested the Yankees swing a trade for Castro as the Twins struggle.
"He's also an excellent athlete who's a threat on the bases and can play pretty much anywhere you need him to," wrote Landers. "That's pretty much exactly what New York should be in the market for at the deadline. LeMahieu had more left in the tank than previously thought, but the Yankees need someone who can stabilize the position and offer some much-needed depth. Castro offers a different look than LeMahieu, and he's a far more reliable bat than LeMahieu, Oswald Peraza or anybody else New York has internally right now. He also would add some more base-running juice to a team that's always in need of more of it."
The Twins are 37-40 and in fourth place in the American League Central entering play on Monday. They are just 2 1/2 games out of a wild card spot, but after an embarrassing series against the Milwaukee Brewers, they may shape up to be sellers.

Castro should have many suitors, but he may be an ideal fit for the Yankees. He is a rental with the ability to replace LeMahieu in their infield. LeMahieu going to the bench would also upgrade the Yankees' bench, as LeMahieu has not been completely lost at the plate. He is just not the threat he once was.
